Issue 8 of pinky, the official @girlscarryingshit magazine, explores games as a tool for community-building. As children, games prime us for the interpersonal expectations of adulthood.They teach us the basics of operating under a mutually-agreed upon (if arbitrary) code of conduct, to take turns, to work together, and the attitude needed to win, lose, or rally for a rematch. For some, games breed competitiveness. But at @girlscarryingshit, we are more interested in faciliating connection, whether we’re gathered in the same room or playing phone tag from opposite sides of the world. 

We were lucky enough to speak candidly with some of our favorite community leaders, Ky Polanco (FEMINIST), Rivkah Reyes & Manon Carrié (Buck Wild Line), Ava Pauline (Ebony Tomatoes Collective), Stéphanie Tonnoir  (The 155th Street Fridge), and the founding members of Dykes & Dolls. We learned what drove them to build their communities, the unseen labor that goes into operating effectively & ethically, and how to  sustain it in the long-term.

We opened the conversation to the greater GCS community to ask about the games they play and how those games intersect with their communities. The girls sent us instructions for their favorite games — most of which require little more than your mind & a friend — and stories to go with them: Anecdotes of  using team loyalty to bond with strangers in a new city; the bittersweetness of learning games from people who are no longer in our lives; the delicate games played in schools, churches, strip clubs, & beyond. So crack the spine of issue 8 and let’s play.
